Social Justice at Lynn Valley United Church
Lynn Valley United Church has a long history of engaging in social justice initiatives as an expression of our faith and commitment to caring for one another. Over the years, members of our congregation have come together through a Social Justice Team to learn, advocate, raise awareness, and respond to needs in our local community and around the world.
While we do not currently have an active Social Justice Team, the work and relationships built through this ministry continue to be an important part of our congregation's story. The team brought together people who were passionate about supporting those facing challenges in daily life, amplifying voices that are often unheard, and promoting a vision of justice, compassion, and dignity for all.
The Social Justice Team sought opportunities to educate, inspire, and encourage action by sharing stories, supporting community initiatives, and fostering meaningful connections. Their work focused on several key areas:
Reconciliation
The team was committed to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and responding thoughtfully to the 94 Calls to Action outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's final report. Through educational programs, cultural learning opportunities, and partnerships with other faith communities, members worked to deepen understanding of the ongoing impacts of colonialism and systemic oppression.
Lynn Valley United Church participated in a variety of reconciliation-focused events and collaborated with organizations such as Reconciliation Matters. Congregation members developed relationships with the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, visited the Squamish Shaker Church, and welcomed Indigenous spiritual leaders to share their teachings and perspectives with our community.
Global Awareness
The Social Justice Team also nurtured global connections and awareness. One significant relationship was with the elementary school in Chwitiziribal, Guatemala. Following a congregational visit in 2018, Lynn Valley United Church joined with other churches to support the rebuilding of the school and to learn more deeply about the social and historical injustices experienced by Guatemalan communities.
This partnership inspired ongoing support, including scholarship sponsorships by congregation members and funding for a daily lunch program. The experience fostered greater understanding, solidarity, and a commitment to global citizenship.
Responding to Local Needs
The team remained attentive to needs within our own community, partnering with organizations that serve vulnerable populations. A key relationship was with First United Community Mission Society in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Through fundraising initiatives such as the Coldest Night of the Year walk and practical donation drives, including socks and other essential items, the congregation worked to support neighbours facing hardship.
The church also serves as a gathering place for a variety of local community groups, including Spectrum Mothers, North Shore Disabilities, a Gong Sound Bath group, and others, providing space for connection, support, learning, and wellness.
Although the Social Justice Team is not currently active, Lynn Valley United Church remains committed to the values of compassion, inclusion, justice, and service. We continue to seek opportunities to learn, build relationships, and respond to the needs of our local and global communities.
