How is a church wedding different from a civil wedding?

A church wedding performed by a minister is similar to a civil wedding performed by a marriage commissioner in that both must meet the legal requirements of the Province of British Columbia and be registered with the Vital Statistics Agency.

In a church wedding, we also hold the spiritual dimension of marriage as central and meaningful. We trust that couples who choose to be married in the church do so with a desire to honour the ideals of Christian marriage and to celebrate their commitment in the presence of God and their community.

The minister would be happy to speak with you, answer any questions you may have, and explore together how Christian understandings of marriage can be reflected in your wedding service.

Do you perform marriages between LGBTQ2S+ couples?

Yes! As an Affirming Ministry, Lynn Valley United Church is honoured to celebrate and officiate ceremonies for couples who identify as LGBTQ2S+.

What options are available for live music for our wedding?

LVUC’s Music Director is available to help you with music arrangements for your wedding. Typically, either the Music Director or their appointee will play for your ceremony, and arrangements can also be made for soloists or other musicians if you wish.

What costs are involved in having a wedding at LVUC?

If you would like to hold your reception at the church, an additional fee of $150 applies.

Weddings are typically booked in morning (9:00 am–1:00 pm), afternoon (1:00–6:00 pm), or evening (6:00–11:00 pm) time blocks, with at least three hours between services on the same day to allow time for any necessary setup changes.

Fees are as follows:

  • $100 per hour for use of the sanctuary

  • $375 minister honorarium

  • $150 musician honorarium (plus additional fees for requested music, if applicable)

  • $100 host fee (covering rehearsal, service, and reception coordination) — this fee may be waived if you provide your own host

  • $100 each for A/V technician and sound technician (one person may be able to perform both roles)

  • $200 memorial reception fee (simple beverage service, set-up/clean-up; food not included)
