On Wednesday, January 14, a group of 8th grade students from Brockton School visited LVUC to meet Reverend Karen Millard, ask her questions about Christianity and the meaning of faith, and view the church.
As part of the school's educational programming on different global religions, students have been studying Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. They have been learning the teachings and values of each of these religions, how to compare and contrast them, and how to analyze their role in modern society.
Reverend Karen Millard walked the students through the significance and responsibilities of her role as a minister, as well as how the United Church of Canada is similar or different to other Christian faiths and the range of religions they are studying. Reverend Karen also gave the students an opportunity to ask her questions about Christianity and the United Church, and they finished their trip with a contemplative labyrinth walk. Reverend Karen was very impressed with the depth and complexity of the students' questions, and several of the students requested a blessing from her to send them off into the rest of their field trip.
We felt honoured to be the stop of choice on the students' tour and to represent Christianity for a new generation of learners as their seek meaning through education and spirituality.
