We have been hearing stories, exhortations and, calls to action for the past month as we acknowledged Black History Month. This week, we continue our reflection with lessons drawn from the books of Deuteronomy and Joshua. Deuteronomy 34 draws us into its emotional context with the death of Moses, who before he died commissioned Joshua to carry on his task of leading God’s people. In Joshua 1, God personally commissioned and assured Joshua that he can undertake the task. God’s mission is not for the faint-hearted. God requires people who are bold and willing enough to take up the task of leading his people in the fight for justice. This is vital for people seeking to eliminate racism wherever it is found.

In the instruction to Joshua, we learn that any assignment from God will require courage. This courage is anchored in God’s word and the assurance of God's presence. As Christians Joshua reminds us that “In the same way it takes faith to rise above a challenge, if there is no mission, there is no need for courage. The book of Joshua reminds us of this principle and calls us to lean into the Courage, Comfort and Confidence in God.
