Right and wrong respect of persons. Is there such a thing? The author of the book of James, it is said, “manifests a straightforward good sense which scatters at a stroke the precepts of pretense, and the illusions of religious self-importance.” James highlighted how class distinctions were recognised in his time; the wealthy worshippers were flattered, and the poor neglected or insulted. Yet, we are taught that “in a Christian community, there should be equality of a common Divine life.” The Scripture illustrated how a faith community should be. A person of a more privileged status should have no more rights and preferences than a person who lacks such status.

As we continue to commemorate Black History Month, we are being called to answer the following questions; Do I love people equally? Do I care for people equally? Do I value the poor person as much as I do a wealthy person? Do I accept persons from oppressed or minority communities? The reality is, in our world, we are going to be faced with people who are favored and disfavored people. My question for us today is, does our faith in Jesus cause us to love, care, and treat everyone equally? Join us in person and online as we examine James’s call to love and faith.
