The Confident, Authentic Voice
Are you a singer, or someone who uses their speaking voice every day? Then this is for you!!
Lynn Valley Voices Community Choir has invited Dr. Madeline Miskie, Voice Professor at Catholic University (Washington, D.C.) and a certified Ashtanga Yoga Teacher, to come and present her workshop “The Confident, Authentic Voice; A Holistic Approach to Singing and Speaking.” After sustaining a vocal injury in 2011, Dr. Miskie re-built her vocal technique using a combination of body awareness, breathing techniques (derived from Hatha yoga) and her knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the vocal instrument. Miskie has devoted her teaching career to helping students of all ages and levels to sing and speak efficiently, with comfort and ease.
The workshop will be divided into two sections. The first half is open for participation from the general public and will explore how increasing your self awareness can lead to increased confidence in all forms of vocal production and presentation! First, we will work to release tension in the body and breath that inhibits vocal production with some light stretching and movement to loosen up some of the tension-prone areas (NOTE: We will NOT be doing any weight-bearing exercises, strenuous twists, inversions, backbends or arm-balances). We will also discuss how thought patterns & emotions can inhibit optimal speaking & singing. Finally, participants will apply this new awareness by reading a brief paragraph in front of the group. The second half will be a masterclass with the choir, where Dr. Miskie will help the choir incorporate these new ideas within their repertoire. Non-choir participates are encouraged to stay to observe the new techniques they have learnt in practical application.
Bring a yoga mat (if you have one) and a water bottle!

Madeline and Frank formed Songscape Duo during their tenure as students at The University of Maryland where they bonded over many things, including their shared love of all things art song, the perfect balance of poetry and music. Songscape Duo is excited to present their “Story in a Song” programme for the FNL and Lynn Valley Community.
