In the punch line of his song, Bob Marley sings, “Won’t you help to sing these songs of freedom? ‘Cause all I ever have, redemption songs, redemption songs.” In a previous verse, he sings, “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery none but ourselves can free our minds.” The title of this song, Redemption Song was composed by Bob Marley in 1980 and became one of his best songs - emblematic and immortal. The message is timeless, especially since August 1, which is recognized as Emancipation Day in Canada. Songs of Freedom have been and are being sung by Indigenous People of Canada and people all over the world. There is also personal, collective, mental and physical slavery of all kinds that requires us to emancipate ourselves. Join us at Lynn Valley United Church as we embark on a journey with the theme “Emancipation: A Song of Freedom”
