What does Policy Governance have to do with the Affirming Ministry Committee?  Policy Governance outlines who is responsible for certain aspects of church life and who people are accountable for their work on behalf of the church.

The Affirming Ministry Committee is a committee that was set up by the Board to do a piece of work. The terms of reference included:

Educating the congregation about the LGBTQIA2S+ community to increase the congregation’s capacity for acceptance and compassion.

 Developing an Inclusive Marriage Policy.

Creating a Vision Statement that would inspire and educate people about how LVUC would live out our Mission as an Affirming Congregation.

Ask the congregation to vote on the question as to whether they wanted to become officially recognized as an Affirming Congregation.

Develop with the Minister a plan for integrating this Vision into the Ministerial Workplan.

Host a Celebration Party!

Well, tick, tick, tick, tick for numbers 1- 4. We were so thrilled to have the vote pass with such incredible support. And yes, we will be hosting a great Celebration Party in the Fall when we are confident that we can all safely gather and share food and conversation in large numbers.

The next step is where Policy Governance steps into play. Under Policy Governance, figuring out how to integrate Affirming Ministry goals into all aspects of the life and work of this church is the responsibility of the Coordinating Minister. Franklyn will achieve this with the support of an Affirming Ministry Team until such time as these goals are a part of the life and work of all the Teams at LVUC.

This is the point where we are sending out an invitation to anyone who is interested in being a part of this vital and exciting work. The new Affirming Ministry Team will work directly with Franklyn. Together they will work to develop new ideas, plans, and programs to take the step from becoming an Affirming Congregation to being a vital thriving force of support and encouragement for the LGBTQIA2S+ community in Lynn Valley.
